Thanks to a partnership between the Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Bainbridge, island ferry commuters departing the busy 4:40 pm and 5:30 pm ferries will soon be able to grab a bag of fresh local lettuce, some crisp sugar snap peas, and a box of sweet Island strawberries before they get in their car or board the bus. A new "Ferry Farm Stand" will open every Wednesday evening beginning June 25 at the Chamber’s Information Kiosk at the Bainbridge ferry terminal, offering a variety of locally-grown produce in convenient $5 bags. A project of the local non-profit group Sound Food, the Ferry Farm Stand is a pilot project to encourage Kitsap commuters to eat more food grown close to home. All of the food sold at the Ferry Farm Stand will be picked fresh at farms on Bainbridge Island and in North Kitsap. Sound Food will provide all of the staffing, organization and promotional support, so that 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the farmers.

RE: What is Green Sanctuary?
For the first day of out green-themed summer RE program we tried to answer the question "What is a Green Sanctuary?" The children listened attentively (listening attentively is a relative thing) as a good-sized contingent from the Green Sanctuary committee talked about topics ranging from recycling and light bulbs that are more energy efficient to reuse and transportation. We wrapped up the content portion of the lesson with some words on eating more locally grown food--a topic that blended in nicely with pictures of a local goat and samples of fresh goat cheese.
The last part of the lesson was devoted to performing two puppet shows in which the puppets were various objects such as a light switch, a plastic milk jug and a bunch of paper grocery bags. This part would have gone better had we a little more time both to prepare and to overcome the difficultly of holding an object/puppet while reading a script.
I would like to give a big "Thank You!" to the five members of the Green Sanctuary committee who volunteered for the lesson. (I would list them here, but I'm not sure if it is appropriate.) I had no idea that the Green Sanctuary committee was harboring so many people who are simply great with the kids.
